This is the story of Hounds Run Vineyard and Black & Ginger Wines.

Both share the same soil and the same sky, often shaped by the same hands, yet each brings something different to life.

One is the place. The other is the expression.

Hounds Run. Where the story began.

Hounds Run sits in the heart of the Grampians. Named after Hadyn and Lucy Black’s hounds, Paddy and Hunter, it is a working vineyard shaped by long days outside, shifting seasons and the kind of weather that keeps you humble.

It is also home.

The vineyard is certified organic and cared for with a long-term view for the future. Farming is the foundation here. Frost, fire and drought are part of the rhythm and every season leaves its mark on the fruit.

Over time the property has grown into a place to share. A tiny house now sits on the hilltop so guests can wake to sunrise over the vines, watch kangaroos wander through at dusk and enjoy a glass of wine under a sky full of stars.

Hounds Run is about place and pace.

It is a reminder that wine begins in the soil long before it reaches your glass

Black & Ginger Wines. Bringing the story to life

Black & Ginger Wines is the creative expression that grows from the vineyard. Started by winemaker Hadyn Black and Darcy “Ginger” Naunton, the idea was simple. Make wines people want to drink with friends. More flavour, less fuss.

The vineyard provides the fruit and grounding. Black & Ginger brings the personality. The wines are small batch and handcrafted with a sense of fun. They celebrate the bold character of the Grampians through regional heroes like Shiraz and Riesling along with a few unexpected varieties.

Many of the wines carry personal stories.

Lily’s Block Shiraz is named after Hadyn’s mum, Lily, who helped in the earliest stages of the vineyard’s journey but sadly passed away before she had the chance to taste the finished wine. That bottle carries more than fruit. It carries legacy.

Lucy’s Rosé, named (unsurprisingly) after Lucy, is made with fruit sourced from Hounds Run. It is bright, vibrant and full of personality.

The Virginia Merlot, named after Darcy’s mum, also draws its fruit from Hounds Run. Just another thread tying family to farm.

Not every Black & Ginger wine comes from Hounds Run fruit and not all Hounds Run fruit ends up in Black & Ginger bottles. That is intentional. The vineyard is the agricultural foundation. The brand is the creative expression.

One grows. One tells.

Why the stories stand apart.

Keeping Hounds Run Vineyard and Black & Ginger Wines distinct lets each do what it does best.

Hounds Run focuses on sustainable farming and fruit quality while Black & Ginger focuses on flavour, story and connection.

From Jam & Juice tastings in the Wine Shed to Trivia Nights, Boardgames & Booze and creative workshops, Black & Ginger brings the vineyard to life in ways that feel relaxed and real. One is grounded, the other is expressive and together they create something stronger.

Both are built on the same principles.

  • Respect for land and region
  • Small batch, hands on production
  • Community over ego
  • Real experiences over polished perfection

The Grampians is known for powerful Shiraz and both brands carry that identity with pride. Farming it well matters. Sharing it well matters too.

Two brands. One living system.

At its heart this is a story of resilience and creativity.

Farming demands grit and resilience. The wine world moves in its own rhythm. Visitors add energy and connection. Storytelling brings the threads together. These layers work side by side to support the land and the people who care for it.

Hounds Run Vineyard holds the story steady in the soil and the wide-open space around it. Black & Ginger Wines brings that story to life through flavour, events, experiences and personality. Two brands. One ecosystem.

When you find yourself on the road in the Grampians you feel it straight away.

This is not a corporate structure. It is a place that lives and breathes.
