Halls Gap to Glenorchy and back

  • Ride Type: Road
  • Difficulty: Advanced
  • Start / End: Halls Gap
  • Distance: 125.8 kms
  • Elevation Gain: 1,237 mtrs
  • Approx Ride Time: 5 hrs

A 125 km loop that takes you from Halls Gap through flat farming countryside before challenging you with over 1000 metres of climbing through the Grampians National Park until you drop back down into Halls Gap. After Stawell there is no food and water stops so you will need to carry your supplies with you.

You head out of Halls Gap on the Grampians Rd for 3 kms then turn right on the Halls Gap - Ararat Rd. It's then a 9 km cycle on undulating road until you reach Pomonal. This section of road can be busy at peak periods with tourist traffic.

Once at Pomonal you then turn left onto the Lake Fyans Rd, for 20 km section that will take you to Stawell. You head straight across the Western Highway into Stawell. Once you cross over the railway line you then turn left onto Franye St and then across to Clifton Ave and head back out of Stawell. Turning left onto Newington Rd - Deep Lead Rd.

We then turn right for a short section on the Western Highway before turning right onto the Old Glenorchy Rd. From there it's 13 km to the crossroad at Glenorchy. You head directly across onto Phillips Rd for another 10 kms.

You head directly across the Western Highway onto the Roses Gap Road to start your upward ascent. It's undulating ride through the Roses Gap section until you arrive at the Mount Victory rd, where you turn left, to head back to Halls Gap.

Then you have the wonderful climb out of the valley floor at Zumsteins up to Reids Lookout at a steady gradient. From the Boroka turn off you have the descent back to Halls Gap with its sweeping turns. Take care on the descent as there are corrugations and pot holes on some corners.

Congratulations, you arrive back in Halls Gap for your well deserved coffee/food break.
