25th Anniversary of Laternenfest, or Festival of Lanterns. German communities celebrate Laternenfest in honour of St. Martin who was known for his generosity of spirit.
He brought light into poor people's lives, and this is symbolized by the lanterns in the village leading up to Laternenfest and the lights of the lanterns carried by children and adults during the closing lantern parade, plus a special finale for this year's significant milestone!
Held in the grounds of Tarrington’s St Michael’s Lutheran Church, the event welcomes the beginning of Advent and features tours of the towns famous church building, stein holding competition, German food, wine, lantern-making, market and craft stalls, children’s maypole dance and other surprises, including a special fireworks display for the 25th Anniversary of this event.
A hay bale art competition is one of the growing and best-loved features of Laternenfest, with ‘artwork’ on display on the streets of Tarrington from mid-November until early New Year- come and explore the creations!
A German style Laternenfest Dinner is held on Saturday evening at Café Catalpa (booking essential).
Come and join in the festive fun.
