Autumn in Great Western

27 Apr 2022

Great Western is known as the wine and food village of the Grampians. This charming town was first settled in the 1840s by sheep graziers, rapidly developing following the discovery of gold and then the planting of grapevines. Today Great Western boasts a crop of pioneering wineries, earning it a reputation for producing some of Australia's finest wine.

As we come into autumn, now is the perfect time to visit Great Western. Vineyards are ablaze with vibrant shades of orange and red, fresh seasonal produce is served in abundance and exciting new events are announced.

Great Western is the perfect place to make your escape this season.

For a delicious breakfast and lunch visit Salingers Café. The cosy, eclectic atmosphere delights diners as they relish in dishes that hero local produce, some straight from the Salingers Kitchen Garden.

Wineries

Producing quality wine since the 1860s, Great Western has an impressive mix of established and boutique wineries.

With its labyrinth of underground cellars (the longest in the southern hemisphere at 3km!) and 165 years of winemaking tradition, historic Seppelt is a must. Next door you’ll find Grampians Estate, make sure you try their famous sparkling Shiraz. Best’s Wines is another acclaimed winery with plenty of fascinating history. Try their award-winning Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon at the Stables Cellar Door before exploring the original underground cellar on a self-guided tour.

Visit some of the newer wineries such as Miners Ridge, home to some of the region’s finest wines. Enjoy a wine tasting and a 'Walk and Talk' in the vineyard with owner and operator Andrew, to learn more.

Down the road and over the hill you’ll find ATR Wines. Settle in at the new cellar door with a delicious produce platter curated by Michelle and cutting-edge wine blends produced by owner and winemaker, Adam Richardson.
